Detailed information on Fleet Miscue

Tue May 19, 2009, 5:54 PM
This is an experimental piece following the concept of a creature being born and living all in one day, in a similar way to the mayfly. This would lead towards a following of the life cycle and a key focus on senses.

The first half of the film takes place in a forest habitat, though it is one which is difficult to locate both geographically and temporally. The second half is in an inndustrialised wasteland, following what may or may not be the same creature. There is also black and white 16mm and colour Super 8 interspersed throughout, this was due to a fascination in experimenting with physical mediums and a structuralist, almost historic approach parts of the film.

There was also a strong research element behind the project, looking into theories of animalism, and other cinematic forms such as transgression, structuralism, affect theory. These have lead to both a conscious and unconscious following of specific ideas and theories.

A key focus has been on the physical, whether it be the physical body or environment or indeed the medium itself. There has also been a physical experimentation with sound, using a mixture of analog and digital mediums, and experimentation with a contact microphone. A major influence on both sound and image has been that of the wildlife film, however we have taken a lead from Herzog's Grizzly Man, or rather Treadwell's own photography, and experimented with a more intrusive form of documentary. Through this aspect we have aimed at increasing the animalism of the human body and have sought to question nature relationships.

The second half also increases this further, perhaps even showing the effects of the funerary nature of the wildlife film on the environment. Our aim was to make a jarring leap which would unsettle the viewer in a similar way to the protagonist, before following a more formal and observational path. Here we also added characterisation the the performance by adding the human characteristics of labor, memory, and science; as well as the obvious feature of upright movement. I use the word science here to describe its most primitive "basic" form, which is that of agriculture.

Myself and Oliver Lewis, being the only crew members took on the role of performer ourselves, increasing the ambiguity of identity. This is a film of texture, mood and ideas rather than narrative (to paraphrase Greenaway). Though narrative obviously formed itself through the edit, but not necessarily in a traditional sense.

No problem!

I love the mood of your photos, they balance the right amount of creepiness and beauty. Its interesting how in your "nothingness" photos the prints appear to be almost decaying themselves

I really want to learn how to develop my own photos sometime.
